Is Cruising for Everyone?
While we are waiting to see what happens with the cruise industry, there is no reason we can’t at least think about cruising since we are spending so much time at home. Although some of you are experienced cruisers others may never have set foot on a ship. So, here is my question for today:
Is cruising for everyone?
With the exception of those with severe untreatable seasickness, I truly believe it is. Here are a few of my reasons:
- It is a great vacation value
- Food and entertainment are included
- It is relaxing or exciting or adventurous or… whatever you want it to be.
- You only have to unpack once
- A cruise can be enjoyed by all age groups and is suitable for multigenerational family trips
I married a man who had never been on a cruise. As president of a company, there never seemed to be time for vacations. He was unenthusiastic about cruising. “I’ll be bored” and “What will I do for an entire week?” For the honeymoon we booked a guided tour of European highlights. He had a history of canceling vacations due to work obligations and sure enough, he canceled the European tour. His colleagues advised his to make sure there would be a honeymoon (smart men!) so he told me to “book one of those cruises you have been talking about”. I was disappointed about Europe but happy I was getting a honeymoon.
It was 1994. I booked a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas. She had been launched in 1992 and was one of the largest, most exciting ships at sea at that time. The ship had a casino and 11 passenger elevators, two of which were glass-walled, various bars, two swimming pools, four hot tubs, a basketball court, and a rock climbing wall. Wow! The ship held a maximum of 2,767 guests. It was the biggest, most glamorous ship I had ever sailed on. The image I still have in my mind is my husband on a lounge chair on the deck at the beginning of the cruise, paging through company reports and making a ship-to-shore phone call from the room to headquarters. By the end of the week, there were no more reports to be seen or phone calls to be made. Just pure relaxation on the lounge chair on the deck. He loved the food and the entertainment. He was smitten.
