Just when I thought I had seen the most amazing fjords in Norway, I arrived in Flam where even more mind-blowing beauty awaited.
Flåm, population 350, is a small picturesque village in southwestern Norway, in an area known for its fjords. It sits at the end of Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the vast Sognefjord and is the home of the Flam Railway.
A fjord is a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier.
Flam was our eighth stop on our 14 days coastal Norway cruise on the Holland America Kongingsdam.
Train or Boat
The Flam Railway is a train journey that is mentioned often as a must see in Flam. On the other hand, the Naeroyfjord cruise was another option we had. Since we only had time for one, based on internet reviews, I chose the cruise.
The Naeroyfjord Cruise
While waiting to board the boat, we spent some time in the Flam Ticket and Visitors Center.
The Aurlandsjord
The first portion of the cruise was on the 10 mile Aurlandsjord, which connects to the narrow and beautiful Naeroyfjord which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This is What Memories are Made Of
Stalheim Viewpoint
The beautiful view of the Nærøydalen valley from Stalheim has for nearly 200 years been one of the highlights of many a traveler’s visit to Western Norway. The road down from Stalheim has 13 steep bends, and on this trip we enjoyed wonderful views of the Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen waterfalls.
Summary
Just when I thought it could not get any more beautiful in Norway, we had this fabulous day of fjords with beautiful views in all directions. As a result, these memories not soon forgotten.
